Sugar and Spice Makes Everything Nice: Jalapeño Simple Syrup
Photos by Sara Magnolia
In preparation for a little Halloween treat that I’m delivering to friends, I hit the kitchen to make some simple syrup. But not just any simple syrup. This time I needed the perfect punch to our ‘Scary, Spicy Halloween Margs...and I knew adding jalapeños to my ‘brew’ would do the trick.
Simple syrups are exactly as advertised to make...simple! And you can get really creative with how you flavor them! Today was jalapeño! But you can check out my recipe for Rosemary Simple Syrup here!
Recipes vary and there are plenty online. But I generally use 1 part water to 2 parts sugar in mine. I start by bringing the water to a boil, add the sugar until it dissolves, and then I bring down the heat to a simmer. As the mixture simmers I add whatever special ingredient I’m working with to the sugary goodness. A few minutes more of simmering and I turn off the heat. I then let the mixture steep for a bit, strain or remove any leftover ingredients, and let cool!
For this batch I gathered some little dropper bottles and filled them with the cooled jalapeño syrup. It’s the final touch ‘deadly’ touch to a Halloween surprise for my friends!
Proof that often the most ‘simple’ things can pack the biggest punch!
Happy weekend, friends!
