Adopting The Hygge Way Of Life

There are a million reasons to explain why the idea of cuddling up with a warm and fuzzy blanket is all that is on my mind. Perhaps the colder weather, the shorter days, or my heavy heart. It just feels right.

When my father passed away, my friends flew in from all over the country to wrap me up and hold me tight. I was so grateful for those first few weeks with my village. It was during this time my friend, Erin, mentioned that maybe it was time we all slow down and adopt the Hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-gah’) way of life. She explained it basically was like living in a warm hug. Ok, Erin, I’m IN!

After doing some research, the obvious appeal of Hygge led me to think about the profound affect a lifestyle focused on self care, comfort, and happiness can mean for our mental health, relationships, and the world. It seems SO obvious, but it also seems so easily missed. We all live such busy lives that it’s easy to not take the time to nurture ourselves. To give ourselves the warm cozy hug we deserve.

I will admit I’m guilty of zooming through life thinking about my to do list and planning for the future. But after my dad’s passing I kept hearing his voice telling me to slow down. To savor. To relax and worry less. My grief led me to take the extra few moments to laugh with the girls as we get ready for school. To take a deep breath when I feel triggered. And to not just carve out the time spent with the ones I love most, but feel the gratitude that comes with the opportunity.

When I started reading more about Hygge, it highlighted so many principles I genuinely value. And the best part, it costs virtually NOTHING to incorporate into your lifestyle! Sure, there are some Hygge helpers that I share in my Must Have for Hygee Guide. But if you just want to create a hyggelig (yes, that’s a word!) vibe in your home, simply put your phone away, be present, take a few deep breaths, and try to give yourself the much needed break we all deserve!

Happy Hyggeling!

Xx,

Jo
